Hey everyone! kaleidofish here. You know, the kaleidofish that supposedly sticks to updating her blog weekly. School’s heading towards Finals week so I’ve been hit with a lot of work and presentations to prepare for. Because of that, I haven’t been updating as diligently as I should. I should be back in the swing of things by mid-June. I’ll get about a week for break, and then after that, it’s school again. I’m unsure what my workload will be like, but hopefully it’s easier on me than this one has been.

I’ve decided on a plan of action for the rest of this summer.

JUNE:

  • Finish the second version of The Mishka Effect. Get it ready for a July release (hopefully). August if unlucky.
  • Write board/social game reviews and prepare them for a Friday queue. Do this over break. [low priority]
  • Get a significant amount written for In This Dream of Ours. At least 2 endings by the time June is over!

JULY:

  • Focus on editing 7 Months in Between based on alpha readers’ suggestions. Get the writing all done.
  • Wrap up as much writing for In This Dream of Ours as possible.
  • If lucky, get an Editor to look over 7 Months in Between to make sure it’s all okay.

AUGUST:

  • Should put finishing touches on In This Dream of Ours.
  • Get feedback on ITDO’s alpha script if it all gets finished.
  • Continue smoothing out 7 Months in Between. August means that it’s approaching nearly a year in development!

I’d like to have the scripts for both 7 Months in Between and In This Dream of Ours 95-100% complete (as in edited, proofread, etc) by the time September hits. 7 Months in Between is much closer than In This Dream of Ours. Starting September, I’ll be working heavily on another project that I’m staying silent on for now.

Somewhere during these months, I’ll also be working on a collab with my new team. Well..not exactly new, since we already worked on The Mishka Effect together. News about that will come later. 😀

Last weekend I got a chance to write a lot for ITDO. And, hey, look! 5 choices!

I like the way that the new story is shaping up so far. Because of the new scenes, ITDO 2014 could be double the size of the original version. I’m not even a quarter of the way through the old script. By my next blog update I’m hoping to add another 3000 words to that total. I want to stay on track with my “3 releases in 2014” goal. I believe I can do it!

Chugging Along

You know… I need to stop being so tight-lipped about what I’m working on. Since it’s not an immediate need, though, I’m going to keep holding off on showing off the in-progress art for the visual novels I’ve got in the pipeline. School continues to be the bane of my existence, especially with finals (lots of presentations and papers) looming in the next few weeks.

I have a schedule for the summer that should give me a bit more time to work. Problem is that I signed up for a creative writing class for the first time ever, so I expect that to require a huge chunk of attention. I’m actually kind of nervous for it. I’ve never even been in a face-to-face writer’s circle before. This is going to be interesting. I’m hoping to get a lot out of the course! If I can, I’ll share my work for that course here and on my Deviantart account.

I wrote roughly 3000 words for In This Dream of Ours, including the first choice of the VN. So, it’s official, the conversion from choiceless KN to choiced VN is going to happen. Surprisingly, writing went rather quickly. I think it might’ve taken me an hour or two to write that much. Imagine if I had a whole day that I could dedicate to ITDO.

Art’s going great for 7 Months in Between. I still need to apply the feedback that I got to the script. Concept arting has also begun for another project that won’t be released for a while. I’ve also been toying with the idea of recruting for a GUI designer for ITDO. My current game plan is to get the In This Dream of Ours remake written up, then move back to fixing 7 Months in Between’s writing, and then move on from there.

By the way, Wednesday’s now going to be update day. Tuesday doesn’t work for my schedule anymore.

I’m taking a stand.

From this point forward, Mishka Florentine will be my last white male protagonist. Unless I can give paragraphs detailing why, it’s not going to happen again. If there’s an ouroboros[connect] stamp on the visual novel, you’ll know what the main POV character won’t be. This doesn’t extend to things I’m doing as collaborations or anything like that. I’m just saying that if I’m at the helm, that’s the way it’s going to be.

But, why, kaleidofish, why? Why limit yourself like that?

I’m not doing this from a place of “oh woe, look at these poor brown people. They never get stories featuring them” or a place of “ooh, lack of POC representation, I should put some into my story as some sort of cash-grab/audience-grab.” I’m doing this for reasons that might be selfish, sure. You might say I’m pushing an agenda, and that’s alright to think so.

I realize that I’ve got a platform here. I’ve got a major opportunity to add my voice, my experiences to the mix of stories that are out there. As a woman of color (half black/half white to be specific), I can do my part in creating stories that better represent us. I want to see “me.” I don’t want to see the “me” that people want to make money off of, or the “me” that’s merely a check on somebody’s diversity check list. (“Ok, ok, quick, add in the person of color so nobody gets mad.”)

We are not a concession to be tossed in. We’re not your appeasement to the warriors and gods of diversity. We are not palette swaps. I will do my part in changing people’s perception of us. I’ll no longer be quiet on this.

Moving Along

I’m sorry I am a few days late on this update. Honestly, because of my night classes, I’m having trouble sticking to a consistent updating schedule.

I’ve received some good feedback on 7 Months in Between. I think I am getting a better idea on what to do about that route that’s been left open. Art’s been moving along steadily. Once I’ve finished the new route, I can show the game to my editor, get GUI & music, and start hunting for backgrounds. It’s going to take me a long while to photograph all the parts of the city that I need. Getting the right photographic angle is going to be a pain, too…

I started doing some writing for In This Dream of Ours. I’m wondering if I can do the writing without an outline. Probably a terrible idea. For now, I’m just trying to improve the original script while marking off places where choices could be. I think I’ve got an alright GUI concept design in mind. Don’t know if I should move on with getting the GUI in place yet, though. I want the script to be done before I start looking around for help with that.

I’m working on some things for The Mishka Effect Version 2. Still discussing the possibility of a new ending for it.

All in all, things are going well. School and life are both keeping me busy. I’m surviving.
